F U T U R E R I T U A L : Julie Tolentino and Joseph Morgan Schofield

Between April and July 2020 F U T U R E R I T U A L presents a season of performances, workshops, screenings and discussion in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), and supported by Chisenhale Dance Space, the Live Art Development Agency and the Arts Council England.

An evening of performances which at once seek to collapse and extend time, considering the transmission of queer memory and the visioning of other futures. These two works - .bury.me.fiercely. by Julie Tolentino and with bare feet touching the sky I yearn by Joseph Morgan Schofield, which negotiate shared time and space - meditate on the erosion//erasion of body, land and knowledge, claiming performance as a site for the transformation of grief and desire, and for imagining queer futures through acts of refusal and deconstruction.

JULIE TOLENTINO is a Filipina-Salvadorean artist whose practice explores durational performance, movement, and sensual practices within installation environments as a way to continually explore the interstitial spaces of race, gender, relationality, and the archive. Her collaborative projects extend into video, object and scent-making, soundscapes, and texts drawn from the “outside" learning spaces of activism, advocacy, loss, and caregiving.

Through a mestizaje lens, my accumulated practice's (il)legibility and its vibration from the margins hopes to contribute to future worlds through a lifetime refusal of gender- and race-based labor and limited representations. The anxious, sensate body, and its palpable non-monogamous, fail-baiting markers, remains my academy. Offering time as a method of production along with sticky materials, improvisation, and live action as threads, I hope to open into shared space as host, comrade, participant, and provocateur.

JOSEPH MORGAN SCHOFIELD is a performance artist and writer. Their works are acts of mythopoesis - embodying other ways of being, in other possible worlds, utilising ritual action as a strategy to vision, divine or fiction queer futurities. From the shards of myths and memories, they distil a queer poetics of body, material, text and space. Their ritual actions often involve difficulty and duress, foregrounding the immediacy of the sweating, bleeding, leaking body. They often work in ways that are semi-scored, ‘channeling’ desires, impulses and ideas as ‘spirits’ in unfolding explorations of desire, memory and endurance. They make performance to offer a site of encounter, through which you might process, desire, mourn or commune.

Joseph is the lead artist of F U T U R E R I T U A L and an associate artist of ]performance s p a c e[.
